WAPP: We All Proficient Programmers.

You know how they say it’s all about the little things we miss? That’s where School comes. No matter how much you hate school, quarantine has made us all miss the loud hallways before and after classes, annoying classmates in the cafeteria, and the fun time you spend at school clubs.

Even if COVID-19 policies do not allow for us to meet in-person and pursue our extracurricular activities, that does not mean that there is no time or place for productivity and creativity.

Some people really do find that isolation helps them tackle creative projects and come up with new ideas when studying from home. While many people are taking a step back and redefining the importance of communities, the emergence of these communities have been increasing notably especially in South-Korea. Many students are gathering online to bring up the value of the digital environment.

WAPP Online Community: Put your programming skills into practice

One of these communities is called WAPP. A bunch of South-Korean based students built WAPP community for anyone who’s interested in programming and looking to develop and share their skills to become a programming master. The project was initially carried out by current developers collaborating with the Korean marketer Jae Gyung Jeong to deliver online courses, workshops, and seminars for student developers who are close to the level of a working developer.

How WAPP Community Meet Online Just Like Offline

  1. Where?
Online. All WAPP meetings are held virtually using the 2D virtual space ‘oVice’. The community has their own private space where they interact as avatars just by moving closer to one another and using video-conferencing tools to communicate.
The space was divided into multiple areas, each designated for a specific learning (Frontend development/Backend development/Seminar Area)

  1. What?
The learning materials are provided by professional developers. There were 3 types of courses dependant on 3 levels: Newbie, basic, and advanced learners. The learns are meant to follow the programming process and apply it on a a certain project or create a clone of the initial project itself. Mainly, the community focuses on communication between peers, practicing the learned content, and later applying it in reality.
  2. How?
Community members meet weekly to study programming. Along side with working on their developing skills, students also get the opportunity to network and make social relationships too. So no, it’s not all boring and only studying about the bible of programming. The purpose is to create a fun learning environment online for those who have passion for programming.
All trainings are held in the virtual seminar room and individual work/meetings are done in the open space simultaneously by different groups of students.

Along side with fulfilling the need for learning, virtual communities are meeting members’ needs of social connection, support, and even friendship. oVice can help fill these needs by creating virtual spaces for these thriving communities that function as a vehicle to drive online learning, social communication and productivity. The key is to provide a social, private virtual environment where students can interact with their role models and fellow-students they trust in the most realistic way possible.
